South Africa’s new Plant Breeders’ Rights Act, effective June 2025, marks a turning point for local and international floriculture. By aligning with UPOV 1991 and TRIPS standards, the legislation expands protection to all plant species, extends rights for up to 30 years, and strengthens breeders’ ability to safeguard innovation. While challenges remain in enforcement and registration, the updated framework enhances legal certainty, supports international trade, and fosters partnerships built on transparency and royalties. Working with diverse families like the Proteaceae demands patience and persistence—but with modernised protections, breeders now have greater opportunity to turn that dedication into global impact.
